Treason Charges Against Accused Coup Plotters Dropped

Former SPLM and military leaders have been released after the prosecutor dropped charges of treason against them. The court formally dismissed the case this morning after the Minister of Justice announced yesterday at a press conference that the ministry and the Prosecutor General have received a directive from President Kiir to drop charges against the accused on trial. The directive extends to the other seven former detainees who were released on bail and are currently in Addis Ababa attending an intra-SPLM dialogue.
The four, ex-SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum, former Minister for National Security Oyai Deng Ajak, former Deputy Minister for Defence Dr. Majak D’Agoot Atem, and former Chief of South Sudan Mission to USA Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, were released to ululations and exuberant celebrations from their supporters.
The four gentlemen denied the charges against them and insisted they were unfounded. The Minister begs to differ and said the charges were not dropped due to lack of evidence but rather for the “sake of peace.” They have expressed their willingness to work together with the government towards peace and stability.
The Court was due to deliver its verdict on April 30.
