New York City (NSV) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit arrived in US on Tuesday to attend the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly.
Upon his arrival in New York City, the president was presented with flowers, as dignitaries stood in line to welcome him.
For Mr. Kiir, this visit comes with all the rituals the UN has always accorded various heads of state throughout its history. Still basking in the spotlight of indepdendence, Mr. Kiir is scheduled to address the UN General Assemlby on September 23.
It will be the first time he will address such a body since South Sudan became independent on July 9. The delegation accompanying him from Juba includes the following: Nhial Deng Nhial, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emmanuel Lowila, Minister in the Office of the President, Garang Diing Akuong, Minister Commerce, Industry and Investment, Stephen Dhieu Dau, Petroleum and Mining, Majok Gwandong, Undersecretary at the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Biel Thich, Deputy Chairperson of South Sudan Human Rights Commission.
During his brief stay, President Kiir is also expected to meet with US President Barack Obama to discuss a range of issues facing the world’s newest nation.
