Suspension of National Census in Southern Sudan good idea
The decision by the GoSS to suspend the forthcoming census is highly welcomed. The chairman of the Census Commission Mr Chol Aruai must understand that, numbers matters and therefore highly political. To elaborate on that for the interest of Chol and his compatriots who see census as "None Political", I would like to briefly point out why and how census is political:
1.Sudan has been regarded by Islamists in the North as Arab and Islamic country despite Black Africans being the majority. The imposition of Arabic language and Sharia as the national language of the country and Sharia was based on false rhetoric that Arabs and Muslims are the majority in Sudan. Has Chol Aruai asked himself why NCP has decided to do away with ethnicity and religion in this forthcoming election?
2. Census matters in politics in that, distributions of resources are based on the geopolitical population of the areas in question. Why should I waste time to tell Chol the basic facts about census? Anyway, I am aware of the disease that has rendered Southerners leaders incapable of telling the truth i.e. brainwashing.
3. The chairman of Southern Sudan Census Commission and his compatriots should understand that census is political because the creation of the constituencies where political representations are drawn from is based on outcome of the census. The politics of Sudan since 1956 is dominated by the Northerners who claim to have more political constituencies. Because Chol failed to understand the importance of census and even failed to inform GoSS about the changes in the Census Form, he must resign and the office given to someone who know what Southerners want from census.
EDITOR'S NOTE:It is important to note that while the inclusion of religion and ethnicity are vital in setting out the record straight, the SPLM appeared to have discovered the importance of ethnicity and religion being part of the census, much too late. Why should they wait till the last minute only to unilaterally opt-out of the agreed upon date?
