The general elections will be the first in Sudan since 1986, three years before President Omar Al-Bashir toppled a democratically elected government in a bloodless military coup. Addressing the Southern Sudanese from his office in Juba on the eve of the registration day, Southern Sudanese President Salva Kiir called on all people of voting age to be registered to vote and called upon all State Governors County Commissioners to mobilize the people to register and facilitate the work of the National Election Commission. SOUNDBITE (English) Salva Kiir, Southern Sudanese President: We have struggled for long to bring about true democracy in our country, and the forth coming general elections will be a great achievement in our continued march towards real democratic transformation in our country. The President urged all the people of voting age eighteen and above in all parts of Southern Sudan to take this exercise very seriously by registering to vote. He extended a special call on women and youth who, he said, are the strong pillars of democratic institutions. Peter Santino lives in suburb of Juba called Hai Seminary.
