(Juba NSV) - Dr. Anne Itto, the deputy secretary general of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement said on Tuesday lack of preparation in the region is hampering the voter registration currently underway in Southern Sudan, declaring the process “dead on arrival.”

Speaking to the press on Tuesday in Juba, Dr. Anne blamed the slowness of the process on the National Election Commission, who she said delayed the transfer of funds to state high election committees. Not releasing the money on time delayed training of personnel and acquirring of logistics needed for successful launching of the registration process, she said.

“The training of registration officers started a few days to the registration date,” said Dr. Anne.

“State committees were not in position to purchase vehicles and transport registration materials in time.”

The semi-autonomous government of Southern Sudan in collaboration with civil society organizations launched the voter’s registration drive last week. Anne said “it’s very unrealistic” to expect the region to complete the process in one month due to logistical difficulties.

South Sudan member of the election committee Mac Maika, told New Sudan Vision that lack of funds are undermining the registration of voters in the south. He said that his organization doesn’t have sufficient funds to spread awareness amongst the citizens about the registration.
