Obhrai(Calgary AB NSV) - Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs briefed the Southern Sudan & Abyei Referenda Conference on Saturday at the University of Calgary, on where Canada stands on Sudan, as it inches closer to a referendum on independence.

Obhrai, who is also Conservative MP for Calgary East, added Canada will continue to build southern Sudan capacity, regardless of the outcome of the referendum.

On the out of country voting and registeration being facilitated by the IOM, Obhrai said Canada's one of a few countries that permit out of country voting for the diaspora. And when they happen, he said, they are held at the premises of a foreign country's embassy.

However, Obhrai said due to high concerns from southern Sudanese about holding the referendum at the embassy, Canada exempted the region, and allowed for two centers, one in Toronto, and the other in Calgary.
