Killer of Sudanese teen is charged with murder

(Winnipeg NSV) – A 34-year-old man has been charged in the September 6 death of Mariak Jok Tuil, police said in a release.

Abiola Akintunde Mathews has been charged with second degree murder and attempted murder. Police said the killer is in custody.   

Police were called to the area of Young Street and Portage Avenue regarding an assault in the Canadian city of Winnipeg on September 6.

Two males were located with injuries to their upper body. A 17 year old male was conveyed to hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, a 21 year old male was conveyed to hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries and subsequently released,” police said.

“The investigation has revealed that the two victims were walking in the area and became involved in a verbal dispute with persons in a vehicle. The dispute escalated to a physical confrontation resulting in the victims being stabbed. The suspects then fled the area.”

Local media reports say about 200 people attended the funeral of Mariak Saturday.
